NRA Personal Protection in the Home Back to Programs

This is an advanced course and shooters interested in doing this one must have completed the NRA Basic Course or proven to the instructor that they have the skills and handling technique provided by that course. The programe covers the following:

  • The mindset required for using a firearm defensively
  • The emotional and physiological aftermath of a confrontation
  • The law relating to self defense
  • The legal aftermath of a defensive shoot
  • Defensive accuracy and shooting principles
  • Strategies for home and personal safety
  • Selecting defensive firearms and ammunition
  • Shooting from and moving to cover

Classroom
This course is taught over 8 to 10 hours of classroom time. It can be split over one or more days and is focused on achieving the objectives not on the time taken. The law lecture is very important and can only be taught by a practicing lawyer. This lecture advises one of one's rights and the procedure to follow after a defensive shoot.

Range work
The range session is very intense and exposes the shooter to a number of positions as well as some of the issues that may be encountered in a defensive shoot such as multiple assailants, cover, and movement. It focuses on practical skills more so than any other course offered as it brings all the elements of defensive shooting together. If you are competent and want to understand your rights and the use of a firearm in a real world setting then this course is for you.
