About the Saint Lucia Shooting Association
Meet the Executive
Becoming a Member
Rules and Regulations
The Saint Lucia Shooting
Association was formed in 1994 and has as two of its
primary objectives, improving the safe ownership and use
of firearms, and expanding shooting as a sport in St.
Lucia.
A
major factor in the formation of the association was the
fact that there was no forum for training in firearms,
difficulty in finding range facilities and little if any
development of the sporting aspect of firearms. The
formative years of the association were spent
sensitizing the authorities to the aims of the
association and providing a range for use by members. In
those early years the focus was primarily on pistol
shooting as many members had pistols, but never the
opportunity to practice or be trained in their use.
In order to ensure that the highest standards are
established and maintained, several members were
encouraged to join the National Rifle Association of
America (NRA), which was founded in 1871. The NRA
affiliation has been very useful in providing training
of pistol instructors, and range safety officers of
which, six persons have completed these courses.
Further, two members have completed the certified home
firearm safety and personal protection in the home
instructor courses to provide necessary and advanced
training for interested persons. To ensure that
shooting events are carried out with the highest safety
standards, members of the executive completed the Red
Cross First Aid and CPR courses, and it is expected that
the association will arrange for all interested members
to undergo such training.
Seminars were arranged with the
assistance of the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force,
particularly the Special Services Unit, with whom the
association has always had a very cordial relationship.
Over time, particularly in the past two to three years,
the focus of the association shifted to competitive
sports shooting, other disciplines, including sporting
clays (shotgun), and improving the shooting and training
standards of its members in order to provide a
formidable challenge to shooters from around the region.
To date, the Saint Lucia Shooting Association is one of
two designated institutions charged with the
responsibility of training firearm applicants in the
safe and proficient use of firearms. The SLSA is also
the institution appointed by the authorities for the
certification of firearm applicants and owners in Saint
Lucia.
